In honor of Earth Day 2019, VERDE, the marketing group that created Recycling Perks, has brought back their popular, award winning 6Rs campaign. They are on a mission to educate residents about how they can alleviate the pressures on our recycling process by reducing waste.

VERDE has brought awareness back to the 6Rs by motivating residents to integrate at least one of the 6Rs into their approach on life. Residents were presented with the pledge via Facebook and email. So far, 2,536 residents have committed to make this small change to their lifestyle. Those who sign the pledge are entered to win a $100 gift card. VERDE aims to remind residents and businesses that recycling is only the 4th step in reducing waste and protecting our Earth. Recycling hasn’t gone well in many areas since China’s National Sword policy was implemented (importation restrictions), and has even been abandoned in some cities. So now is a great time to remind people about how to reduce waste overall instead of “just” recycling. The U.S. buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources – paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials – in landfills and incinerators last year. By integrating the 6Rs into our lives, everyone can easily help reduce this number just by reducing their personal use of resources. This year VERDE hopes that residents will join the other 1 billion people celebrating Earth Day not just as observers but as participants.

So, what exactly are the 6Rs?

The 6Rs are six things that we all can do to “close the loop” on recycling as businesses and as residents. The first part of the 6Rs may be the hardest: Refuse to buy anything that can’t be recycled or has a one-time only use. Think twice before buying anything. By reducing the number of “single use” or non-recyclable items that you buy, you can ensure that less waste ends up in landfills.

When you reuse items, and upcycle, repair, or donate them when needed, you also produce less waste. From the items you have left, recycle the ones that are recyclable. It’s easy to start with the basics like paper, aluminum, and plastic bottles. Residents who are eligible for the Recycling Perks program can take advantage of this benefit and redeem rewards points for discounts from great local businesses that support recycling as well as discounts from select national businesses that offer cool, environmentally responsible products.
