Bozeman is looking at the feasibility of its citywide recycling and compost collection service. Currently, the city offers limited composting for lawn clippings during the summer. It’s considering taking on more organic material with an automated organics collection service. The city will consider its resources in accommodating a composting service in Bozeman. It is a tedious task to do properly.

“Just speaking broadly about other municipal programs that I know of, they still have a high amount of contamination, and they have less ability to take stuff out by hand because they’re using automated systems and they’re not really set up for it,” owner of Yes Compost Karl Johnson said.

Yes Compost is a composting business in Belgrade. It serves the Bozeman area and Big Sky. According to Johnson, educating customers about how to compost is a hands-on task that takes time. The city recently contracted a consulting firm for about $27,000 to consider changes in its solid waste services. This is the first step in a process that includes updating solid waste operations and altering its dated rate model.
