The 2020 Federation of New York Solid Waste Association’s Conference and Trade Show runs May 17– 20 at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, NY. Upwards of 700 attendees from over 32 states, Canada and Europe are drawn to the extensive technical program with 90 presentations and a phenomenal trade show supported by 120 major exhibitors. In 23 years, attendance has doubled and the conference has become the “Can’t-Miss” solid waste and recycling event of the northeast.

Per- and poly-fluoralkyl substances (PFAS) are receiving ever-growing attention as more states set stringent drinking water standards to protect public health. PFOA and PFOS have been the most extensively produced and studied of these chemicals. Both chemicals are very persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and they can accumulate overtime. Regulatory agencies are expending considerable effort to evaluate environmental sources of PFAS, such as landfill leachate and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent.

During the Federation’s multiple breakout sessions on PFAS, industry experts will delve into the latestresearch being done on how PFAS are entering our environment, the landfill’s ability to sequester PFAS and WWTPs’ capacity to effectively treat PFAS. Speakers will present case studies on innovative PFAS destruction technologies, covering system performance and economics.

The Federation’s seminar topics are a wide-ranging mix, covering emerging issues and technologies (many qualifying for P.E. continuing education credits). Over 75 speakers from across the nation will be presenting the latest on materials management, reuse, recycling, composting, energy-from-waste and landfill issues throughout 30 panels over two and a half days.
