Beginning Nov. 5, Bend Garbage & Recycling and Cascade Disposal will begin collecting all food waste curbside, including meat, dairy, produce and bakery to turn into compost. Previously, only raw fruit and vegetable scraps were accepted.

Designated customers within Bend’s city limits will be notified about the program by the two companies, and anyone with a yard debris subscription who lives in the designated areas will be able to participate, according to the release.

Participating households will be able to add all their food scraps directly into their yard debris containers along with their yard trimmings. The yard debris and food scraps will be processed into “a nutrient-rich compost” by Deschutes Recycling, according to the release.

Customers participating in the pilot program will receive a two-gallon kitchen pail to store food scraps, which can then be emptied into yard-debris carts for collection. They will also receive an outline of what materials can and can’t be included. There will be no changes to customers’ normal collection schedule for yard debris.
