GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA), a leading multi-disciplinary firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services, is honored to announce it has been awarded the National Safety Council’s first “Safety Leadership Award” after having received the “Perfect Record Award” for the fifth year in a row. The Council’s Safety Leadership Award recognizes 60 consecutive months of work without incurring an occupational injury or illness that resulted in days away from work. For GZA, the award reflects a 100 percent success rate in preventing lost work days among staff based at 31 offices in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Great Lakes Region, Colorado, and Tennessee, and over 5 million hours worked without occupational injury or illness.

“Six years ago, we redirected our training efforts for our entire staff towards a behavioral safety system that explored both the psychology behind why people sometimes act unsafely and focused on the person rather than the safety program. Safety manuals are important, but pieces of paper are only the beginning of keeping people safe,” said Rick Ecord, CIH, CSP, a GZA Principal and the company’s Safety and Learning Director.

In addition to conforming to the international Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OSHAS) 18001 standard, GZA implemented a behavioral safety approach called “SLAMS” that helps employees address issues affecting their safety and the safety of those they are working with. SLAMS stands for:

Stopping,

Looking for hazards,

Analyzing the hazards you see,

Managing the hazards, and

Sharing what you’ve learned with colleagues.

“Over the last five years, GZA has further built on a company culture dedicated to putting safety at the center of all that we do,” said GZA CEO Patrick Sheehan. “I’m proud of the efforts everyone at GZA makes every day to maintain that culture, and we are honored to have received this wonderful recognition from the National Safety Council.”

Ecord added: “It takes dedication and hard work from our employees to maintain this level of safety excellence, and I am very proud of my colleagues for doing so. It’s important for our clients to know they are partnering with a firm that works safely, and awards like these are a way to demonstrate that commitment.”
