A report by the Guardian found that around 50% of food in the United States is thrown away. This makes America world leaders, although the entire world has a problem with food waste. You likely dispose of your unwanted dinner and moldy bread by chucking it in the garbage disposal. However, given how much you are likely throwing away, your disposal unit could come under strain. Replacing a garbage disposal unit is expensive on both your wallet and the environment, especially if it ends up in already-full landfill. Increase lifespan of your garbage disposal with these tips.

Grinding Waste Correctly
Unground waste could end up stuck in the pipes and therefore not be fully disposed of. In order to effectively remove waste from your home, grind thoroughly. Allow enough time for all chunks to be removed and for water to completely flush away the unwanted products. If any large particles are left behind, the waste will take up more room in landfills and leave a foul odor in your home. Unground waste will clog pipes and could cause breakage.

Forbidden Waste Items
If you want to ensure that your garbage disposal works effectively and for a long time, then you must take extreme care with what you put in it. Forbidden garbage disposal items include bones, nuts, seeds, vegetable peels, grease, rice and pasta. Almost 80% of Americans feel guilty about throwing food away, so use this feeling to motivate a tendency against disposing of unwanted food. Keeping these forbidden products out of the waste disposal will ensure its longevity. If you’re unsure about an item then don’t risk it: if in doubt, leave it out.

Keeping it Clean
It can be too easy to ignore the cleaning of trash units. This is understandable, since you’re only going to make it instantly dirty again. However, if you neglect the cleaning of your garbage disposal, then a buildup of dirt will inhibit its usage. You should ideally clean the unit thoroughly each week. This will help it to work effectively by preventing blockages. It will also keep your home smelling clean.

The garbage disposal is probably one kitchen item that you haven’t thought much about. While you clean your microwave and oven regularly, how much attention do you pay to the trash? Being careful with what you put in the garbage and grinding it properly, will ensure your unit lasts longer and prevents a buildup of excessive food waste, both in your unit and the landfill sites.
