Las Cruces Utilities, with South Central Solid Waste Authority, has started replacing the existing containers as part of the newest initiative to let customers know exactly who to contact if they have problems with their solid waste or recycling pickup. Customer Central, which can answer questions for both agencies, has staff who can answer any questions from what goes into the blue bin to when the next grappler pickup will be for an address. “It’s a one-stop-shop that’s a starting point to get help with our services,” said LCU Director Delilah Walsh. “The MOU [Memorandum of Understanding] with SCSWA has deepened our partnership to make sure that the needs of our residents are met more effectively. With the new bins, it’ll be easy to know what might go in which bin.”

Customer Central’s “One Stop, One Call” line has two dedicated representatives to answer solid waste collection, disposal, and recycling questions. Does the Styrofoam go in the recycling? No, but it’s a typical question that’ll find an answer at Customer Central. “In the coming weeks, SCSWA staff are exchanging recycling containers on the day of service after the truck has gone by and emptied the containers,” said LCU Interim Solid Waste Deputy Director Rosa Montoya. Montoya asks that even if recycling containers are emptied on the normal service day, please leave old containers on the curb until 4 p.m. so that crews have a chance to replace them.

“Crews may not get it the first time, even if a customer leaves it until 4 p.m. It’s a large job to swap thousands of them,” Montoya said. “Customers might not always put out their containers because they’re not full or empty, but we are encouraging everyone to take them out on your service day until replacement is complete.”
