Mount Prospect is recognized as a leader, in the Chicago area, for the village’s innovative and ambitious approach to recycling. The Mount Prospect Public Works Department has received the 2018 Illinois Sustainability Award from the University of Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC). Through several inventive programs, the village was able to divert 35% of residents’ waste from landfills to recycling facilities in 2017.

This year, Mount Prospect added an organics recycling program to the mix, allowing compostable organic material into yard waste. In addition, the village is only the third municipality in the Chicago metro area to implement a weekly curbside textile-pick-up and recycling program.

Commending Public Works Director Sean Dorsey, Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek said, “It was a true honor for the village to receive this award.”

Recognizing the efforts of local residents, Dorsey said, “By being resourceful and involving our residents in the effort, we are making the entire community more sustainable.”

ISTC has been presenting the Sustainability Awards to organizations in Illinois “that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence…”, since 1987. Seasonal collections round out the reprocessing opportunities.
