Henderson County Environmental Programs and the Henderson County Sherriff’s Office are partnering on a Food Waste Collection pilot program at the Detention Center. Leftover food and paper are collected in bins from the kitchen, and picked up by Atlas Organics, a large-scale compost facility. The successful pilot has collected over 11,000 pounds of organic waste since it started a year ago in April 2018.

Henderson County is working to eliminate the amount of organics entering the landfill through various programs,” says Environmental Programs Coordinator Christine Brown. Environmental Programs offers free backyard compost workshops throughout the year.
