NWRA is encouraged by the newly released U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), notably its goal of zero roadway fatalities. “We appreciate the hard work of the transportation department and believe this is a good step toward safer roads,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We look forward to working with DOT and its operating administrations and bureaus, specifically the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, to help improve the safety of waste and recycling collection workers as well as other roadside workers.”

NWRA urges USDOT to work across the executive branch to eliminate distracted driving through engineering controls as opposed to the enforcement policy that is currently in the NRSS. The Association continues to support state and federal efforts to raise awareness and educate the motoring public on the need to move over for waste and recycling collection vehicles as well as emergency and similar vehicles.
