The New York City Business Integrity Commission (BIC) adopted rules aimed at making the waste collection industry safer. The new rules include regular vehicle inspections, additional mirrors to reduce blindspots and safety training. “We strive every day to ensure our waste collection workers come home safe at the end of each day,” said National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) President and CEO Darrell Smith. “NWRA was pleased to provide input on the rules proposed by the New York City BIC. We support these regulations to make our industry safer.”

NWRA and its members have undertaken numerous initiatives that represent a comprehensive approach to improving safety for workers in the waste and recycling industry. The NWRA Board of Trustees recently approved a significant financial commitment to form a partnership with the National Safety Council to better understand the safety needs of the waste and recycling industry and develop resources aimed at making the industry safer.
