NWRA joined other associations on a letter urging Congress to include a five-year reauthorization of transportation programs in the bipartisan infrastructure package recently approved by the Senate. Federal funding for these programs will otherwise expire on September 30, 2021, when the current extension runs out. Additionally, without action by Congress, the Highway Trust Fund will begin facing shortfalls as early as November, which will disrupt construction projects.

“The waste and recycling industry and the United States Postal Service are the only two entities that travel every road in America at least once a week,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “We urge Congress to include a reauthorization of funding for federal transportation programs in the infrastructure package so that states and local governments have the financial resources to proceed with planned projects to make our roads safer and strengthen our transportation systems.”
