NWRA has announced that it would make available its weekly e-newsletter, Safety Monday, for free moving forward to anyone who requests it. This includes both NWRA members and non-members regardless of whether they are in the private or public sectors of the waste and recycling industry. “We have consistently said that NWRA is committed to safety, and we are. That is why we are taking this monumental step to provide one of our most popular safety resources, Safety Monday, for free to everyone in the industry. Safety information should be shared and not put behind a firewall or be marketed as a benefit of an association’s membership. We want to help the entire industry be safer,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that our industry dropped from the fifth to the sixth deadliest occupation. We hope that by making this information available at no cost our industry will continue to become safer.”
Safety Monday is a copyrighted product of NWRA produced in collaboration with NWRA’s Safety Committee. “We have a group of smart, talented safety experts in our association. NWRA’s Safety Monday is an opportunity for them to pass along their knowledge, highlight rising safety professionals and help make the waste and recycling industry a safer place to work,” said NWRA Chief of Staff and Vice President of Safety and Standards Kirk Sander.
The Safety Monday e-newsletter, published for many years by NWRA, is often used by safety professionals and supervisors during their meetings to provide important reminders to their employees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Safety Monday e-newsletter has provided resources to reduce the spread of the illness as well as usual reminders about safe driving, collection practices and staying healthy.
NWRA is working on demonetizing its other safety products with a goal of not profiting on safety. For instance, all of its safety webinars were offered for free since the beginning of the pandemic. NWRA understands that many small businesses and municipalities are struggling financially due to the burden that COVID-19 has placed upon them and wants to ensure that safety does not pay the price during these difficult times.
