Republic Services, Inc. was named to 3BL Media’s annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking, recognizing outstanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency and performance among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. This is Republic’s first time on the list and a recognition of the Company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“Republic Services’ ranking as one of the country’s best corporate citizens is a testament to the work of our 36,000 employees and a demonstration of our values in action,” said Don Slager, chief executive officer. “Through our long-term sustainability platform and accompanying goals, we are constantly striving to deliver bold programs and durable practices that make a meaningful positive impact on the environment, our employees and society while enhancing our business.”

Republic Services last year unveiled an ambitious set of 2030 sustainability goals, which are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and focused on five pillars: safety, people, operations, materials management and communities. The Company was the first U.S. recycling and solid waste services provider to have its emissions reduction target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking is based on 141 ESG transparency and performance factors around climate change, employee relations, environment, finance, governance, human rights, stakeholders and society, and ESG performance.

“Achieving the transformational targets in the Paris Agreement and U.N. Sustainable Development Goals in this decade means we need all companies to embed ESG issues into their business,” said Dave Armon, CEO of 3BL Media. “The best corporate citizens of 2020 are leaders, demonstrating how transparency, ambitious goals, robust strategies and accounting for all stakeholders builds business and social value.”
