SWANA is accepting submissions for its 2021 Safety Awards, including for a new category recognizing the best agency or company response to the COVID-19 pandemic. SWANA encourages public or private sector solid waste organizations to apply for consideration in one of three categories – Best Safety Innovation, Biggest Safety Improvement, or COVID-19 Response. This third category was added this year to honor outstanding efforts to protect workers and the public during the pandemic.

“The past year demonstrated conclusively the importance of prioritizing worker safety, in response to, and despite, the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” commented David Biderman, SWANA’s CEO and Executive Director. “We look forward to presenting SWANA’s industry-leading safety awards at WASTECON® later this year.”

“This is a great opportunity for safety leaders in our industry to demonstrate ways they have innovated and improved safety process for the benefit of their employees, and to pay it forward to other companies and agencies that are looking to improve their safety response and company cultured,” said Suzanne Sturgeon, SWANA’s National Safety Committee Chair and Health & Safety Manager at SCS Engineers. “I look forward to seeing what our partners are doing during these trying times.”

There is no fee to enter, but the applicant must be a SWANA member. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, June 30 and winners will be recognized at WASTECON® 2021 in Orlando, Florida, November 1-3, 2021. SWANA would like to thank this year’s award program sponsors, Caterpillar, New Way, Peterbilt, and Safe Fleet. Their support of this program is invaluable and demonstrates their ongoing commitment to industry safety.
