There were six fatalities in Texas due to trash and recycling collection services in 2018, according to data tracked by the Solid Waste Association of North America, which uses reports from companies to calculate fatalities related to the solid waste industry. Texas had 13 solid-waste collection-related fatalities in 2017, the most of any state, according to SWANA. The fatalities included contract workers, long-haul truckers transporting waste and pedestrians who are killed by collection vehicles.

Of the 2018 fatalities in Texas, three workers were killed, two drivers were killed in collisions and one pedestrian was killed in a collision. Several states have implemented “move over” laws that require drivers to slow down or move over when approaching a stopped collection vehicle. A bill awaiting decision by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott would make “move over” laws applicable to waste collection vehicles.
