The Northeast Recycling Council’s Fall 2018 Conference is just around the corner and will address some of the topics of greatest concern for Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). Attendees and exhibitors from the Northeast and throughout the nation will gather at the Sheraton Hartford South Hotel in Rocky Hill, Connecticut on October 30 – 31, to participate in presentations and discussions that will delve into today’s issues affecting MRFs—the facilities that separate and bale recyclables for end markets.

The Conference will open with introductory remarks from Commissioner Rob Klee of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Following Mr. Klee will be a Keynote Panel including: Bob Cappadona of Casella Recycling, LLC, Susan Robinson of Waste Management, and Frank Chimera ofRepublic Services. The panelists will talk about how they are dealing with the new restrictions on recyclables exported to China, operational adjustments made to MRFs to accommodate the market changes, battling high contamination levels in what gets recycled, contracting with municipalities for recycling services, and investments in MRFs.

The Conference will continue with Eileen Berenyi of Governmental Advisory Associates, Michael Timpane ofResource Recycling Systems and Mitch Kessler, Principal, Kessler Consulting, Inc. discussing trends with MRFs and contracting for municipal recycling services. Another noteworthy session will feature Gregory Anderson of New York City Department of Sanitation, Tom Outerbridge of Sims Municipal Recycling, and Jared Rhodes ofRhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation presenting about the recycling services contracts they have with municipalities, as well as maintaining a business relationship with them. And the last session of Day One will include Todd Ellis of Call2Recycle, Ryan Fogelman of Fire Rover, and Nat Egosi of RRT Design and Constructionwho will present on the issues with and causes of fires at MRFs and the upcoming technological advances for MRFs.

Day One will end with NERC presenting an Environmental Sustainability Leadership Award to an individual or organization for the impact they have made on sustainable materials management within the NERC 11‐state region.

Day Two of the Conference will begin with a session about the growing e-commerce and its effect on MRFs, which will be presented by Scott Byrne of Ameripen, Dennis Colley of the Fibre Box Association, and Brent Heist of Procter & Gamble.

This session will be followed by Tim Devivo of Willimantic Waste, Chris Coady of the Recycling Partnership, and John Culbertson of MSW Consultants discussing strategies to engage the public and monitor contamination in what gets recycled.
