The Florida Chapter of SWANA members have elected Mike Fernandez, Waste Pro’s Vice President of Post Collections, to the Board of Directors. SWANA is the largest and leading association in solid waste management. Mike brings a wealth of experience to his new role. As the past director of SWANA’s Collection and Transfer National committee, he has actively participated in various committee engagements and local and regional chapter roundtable discussions.  He has also served as a consultant and liaison between local, state, and national organizations and has been active in the organization’s mentor program. Over the last several years, he has been a distinguished speaker and presenter at SWANA SOAR, WASTECON, and the National Association of Waste to Energy Conference.

Mike joined Waste Pro after leading the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management for 15 years. Miami-Dade County is the largest government-owned and operated collection, recycling, transfer, and post-collection operations in the Southeastern United States. Mike led the operations, budget, and oversight for this large government-owned, vertically integrated solid waste system, managing over 1,100 employees, facility management, and equipment maintenance. As Waste Pro’s Vice President of Post Collections, Mike manages the development and operations of 25 landfills, 11 transfer stations, and 5 recycling processing facilities throughout the company’s 10-state footprint.

“I look forward to bringing my combined public and private sector experience and knowledge. I am excited to share this with other SWANA members and emerging leaders, as well as my skills, passion, and understanding of the industry I have gained over my 30 years in solid waste and recycling.” Mike shared.
