Starting September 1, the City of West Memphis will move to curbside garbage collection for the first time in the city’s history. The move is expected to be safer, save money and make the city cleaner. West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon said the city was one of the few in the country where sanitation workers were walking to the back of homeowners yards to pick up trash.

“I thought that was ridiculous, the ones that are not obeying the rules, and their yard might be two feet of grass and they got snakes,” said Justin Grant, a West Memphis homeowner. McClendon said not having curbside was costing West Memphis more money. The new trashcans will save the city one-million-dollars a year.
