This week at the end of the first day of Bio-Based Live Americas in San Diego, the winners of the Bio-Based Innovation Awards (Americas) were announced. After a two month process, our panel of independent industry expert judges carefully deliberated and decided our shortlist and winners. We received a varied range of entries from bio-based fuel for charcoal BBQ’s and plant-based bottles, to microalgae enzymolysis and bio-based butylene glycol. But there could only be one winner for each category, so who took home the trophies this week?

The winner of the Bio-Based Product of the Year (Americas) 2017 is Green Dot Bioplastics with their John Deere Eco-Rigs toys. When BeginAgain toys asked Green Dot to formulate a biocomposite for the project they went straight to corncobs sourced from Midwest farmers. Green Dot combined these corncob fibers with Braskem’s ‘I’m Green’ bio-based polyethylene to create a “sweet” new bio-based bioplastic grown and harvested with the same vehicles the toys depict.

Green Dot Bioplastics CEO, Mark Remmert on picking up the award: “We’re honored to receive this award in recognition of our work with BeginAgain Toys and would like to extend our thanks to Bio-Based World for sponsoring the conference. Every day we work with product designers and brand owners to make the products that consumers use and love more sustainable. The conference was a great opportunity to gain new connections and foster relationships with others committed to helping consumers contribute to a more sustainable world.”

Runner-up is Green Biologics with their GreenFlame® Natural Charcoal Lighter Fluid, a USDA BioPreferred certified clean-burning charcoal lighter fluid. Naturally sourced from agricultural products, mainly US-grown corn, eliminating the potentially harmful chemicals associated with fossil fuels. Our highly-commended product is Totally Green Bottles with their Great Plastic Flip.

The winner of our Bio-Based Chemical Innovation of the Year (Americas) 2017 is ECOSYNTHETIX with their DuraBind™ Engineered Biopolymers – Sustainable Binders for Wood Composites Applications. Thee bio-based alternatives are an improvement on traditional binder systems which have been used for decades in the wood composites industry and offer higher productivity, less downtime, increased line speed, reduced panel sticking and improved panel quality and environmental benefits through the re-use of waste water.

“Winning the Bio-based Product of the Year for 2017 from Bio-based World News is more evidence of the traction our DuraBindTM offering is receiving as a No-Added-Formaldehyde (NAF) binder for wood composite panels. Bio-based World News has been a long-time supporter of innovative technologies that are helping transition society to more sustainable practices and we appreciate their support and recognition,” said Jeff MacDonald (pictured above) CEO of EcoSynthetix Inc.
