Transportation Jobs

Typically with residential or commercial trash transportation positions in the waste industry you need a high school diploma or a g.e.d.   You will also most likely need to have some experience driving a commercial truck and a Valid Class A or B CDL license with air brakes endorsement.  There are also jobs available for more specific transportation jobs like medical waste transportation and removal.

Some of the personality qualities and behaviors desired by most employers in the Waste Management Industryinclude professionalism, cooperation, courteousness and dependability.  It is also beneficial if you are safety conscious and ethical.  You will have some interaction with the public so employers want to make sure they are well represented in the field.

Waste Facility Operations Supervisor

An operations supervisor’s responsibilities may include the supervision of employees performing waste collection, dispatch, performance management, and general all-around problem solver.  An operation supervisor is also usually responsible for some administrative tasks like working with route schedules and time sheets.

Many supervisory jobs require observing employees and working with the employees to improve performance.  They may also provide status reports to next level management and work with payroll and customer accounts and waste management software.   In addition, they may investigate accidents or property damage claims.

Environmental Engineer

There are a wide variety of Engineering jobs in the waste and recycling industries. Many of these positions have a lot to do with making sure the company you are working for is in compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations plans and permits.

Most Environmental Engineering jobs require a high level of responsibility because not only are you are the one who will be monitoring, testing, reporting and record keeping things like air emissions, you are also the one who will be giving direction on environmental compliance to operating personnel.  There are many other skills, licenses, certifications, and a few year of experience required for this type of position.

Hazardous Waste Operator 

The Hazardous Waste Operator or Technician may be required to perform tasks and duties related to management of regulated wastes.  They assure proper identification and classification of new wastes during on-site storage until the waste is transported to a disposal facility.

For example the hazardous waste operator may classify, register, train, label, package and ship regulated wastes for disposal.  In so doing, they will need to operate waste handling equipment and support systems to store and package waste into shipping containers.  They must follow safety procedures and regulations, including wearing special protective gear and disposing of wastes as regulated by law and company best practices.
