University of Virginia alumni Bob Gardner (‘79 BSCE, ‘80 MECE) was elected Vice-chairman of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation’s (EREF) Research Council in November 2017. The EREF Research Council provides technical expertise and guidance to the EREF Board of Directors supporting the selection of grant funding allocations that will achieve greater sustainability, sound environmental stewardship, higher efficiency, and
increases knowledge within the industry. The Council also provides ongoing project review and assessment of completed projects.

During the same week, Mr. Gardner was reelected to the Board of Directors at SCS Engineers, an environmental consulting and contracting firm serving clients across the nation and around the world. Mr. Gardner has been with SCS since 1980. The firm’s core capabilities are in solid and hazardous waste management, energy, remediation and environmental compliance. SCS works to prevent, mitigate and remediate environmental events and helps promote sustainable waste management practices enhancing efficiency and ecological well-being.

Mr. Gardner’s expertise and technical breadth are well known in the industry. As a Senior Vice President, Mr. Gardner is responsible for overseeing SCS Engineer’s nationwide solid waste management practice, which includes solid waste planning and studies, financial analysis, landfill services, operation and maintenance, and construction. Along with sharing his knowledge through his professional affiliations, Mr. Gardner is a Professional Engineer in thirteen states, Puerto Rico, and is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer in Solid Waste Management.

Bob Gardner earned his Master of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with an Environmental focus in 1980, after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil
Engineering in 1979. In addition to EREF, his other professional affiliations include the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Solid Waste Association of North America, National Society of Professional Engineers, National Waste and Recycling Association.
