Campbell County has installed large recycling compactors at four of its waste collection sites, allowing residents to place all recyclable items into a single container without sorting them. This has been made possible through a non-profit grant and a partnership with Elite Recycling.

The compacted waste is later sorted out by a machine at Elite Recycling’s facility. The system, known as co-mingling, has already been in use at Campbell County Public Schools. “That’s saving us dollars every single year. Whether our residents realize that or not, that is a very effective way of recycling and making sure that we don’t just dump things into a landfill,” said Rustburg District Supervisor Jon Hardie.

Hardie said the county has seen demand from residents for more recycling options and that Elite Recycling has been a key partner in meeting that demand. “We have a strong relationship with Elite Recycling, which is a private company here located in Campbell County. They’ve done an excellent job working with our waste and actually helping minimize the waste that we all share,” said Hardie.
