With more than 300 attendees, this dynamic conference included informative sessions, facility tours and great networking opportunities.

The 9th Annual Canadian Waste to Resource Conference (CWRC) put on by the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA), was held in October 2018, with more than 300 registered attendees, speakers and guests attending the three-day event that included the facility tours to local Toronto waste management facilities, an amazing opening gala reception followed by unique and informational plenary sessions.

As part of this year’s event, CWRC launched the first ever app for the conference along with a contest for someone to win a full conference registration for 2019.

The first morning session included a panel with unique insights from three high level industry leaders, Dan Pio, President – Canada, Waste Connections of Canada; Dave Richmond, Executive Vice President, GFL Environmental Inc.; and Aaron Johnson, President, Waste Management of Canada. They led a discussion around the challenges, opportunities and future outlook for waste management in Canada and beyond.

Following the morning general sessions, all participants visited the Poster Board Presentations where students showcased their findings of new and innovative technologies over lunch. The afternoon included breakout sessions covering topics such as recycling and resource recovery, food waste/organics waste management and green energy.

On the last day of CWRC, the morning session included a panel presentation, titled Sustainably Transforming Revenues, which included speakers Vince Sferrazza, Director of Policy, Planning and Support Solid Waste Management Services, City of Toronto; Francois Leury, CPA CGA, Financial Services Account Manager, Public Works & Environmental Services Department, City of Ottawa; and Emil Prpic, Manager, Recycling and Waste Disposal, City of Hamilton.

Closing out the conference, the CWRC was thrilled to have Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation & Parks, Honourable Rod Phillips, deliver the luncheon keynote address outlining his objectives for the Ministry and discussing the priorities of the Doug Ford Progressive Conservative government.
