While it may take several years, Clark County Council is looking at options for taking ownership of two of the three waste transfer stations in the county. Columbia Resource Co., a division of Waste Connections, currently owns and operates the transfer stations. The purchase of existing and any future transfer stations is included in the county’s contract with the company, which expires in 2032.

Joelle Loescher, manager of the county’s solid waste and recycling division, said the county has the option to purchase the West Vancouver and Central transfer stations for $1. Should the city of Washougal decide not to purchase the Washougal Transfer Station, the county could also purchase that facility for $1.

“We do have a current interlocal agreement with language in there referencing that we will focus on a regional ownership structure rather than the county solely owning,” Loescher told the county council earlier this month. One ownership option for the transfer stations would be a joint partnership between the county and the city of Vancouver.
