The Recycling Leadership Council (RLC) released the following statement from John Hewitt, RLC spokesperson and senior vice president of packaging and sustainability at the Consumer Brands Association, following Wednesday’s House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade hearing on the Recycled Materials Attribution Act (RMAA) and the Packaging and Claims Knowledge (PACK) Act:

“The Recycling Leadership Council appreciates the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade for working to enhance America’s recycling system through the RMAA and the PACK Act.

“These two bills will strengthen consumer protections by establishing clear federal standards for recycling and recycled-content marketing claims. Consumers want to recycle and buy products made with recycled content, but conflicting federal and state laws create consumer confusion, discourage industry investment in innovative recycling technologies and increase product costs. Now is the time to reduce regulatory uncertainty and unlock investment in domestic recycling infrastructure, giving consumers reliable information and companies consistent standards.

“We commend subcommittee members on both sides of the aisle for their commitment to advancing this common-sense, bipartisan legislation that will help keep valuable materials in productive use and everyday products affordable.”
