Solid, liquid, or gaseous waste new minimum standards
from Waste Industry ProductsSolid, liquid, or gaseous waste reimagined. Could new minimum standards be far behind? At FastForward Energy (FFE), they set very high goals when reimagining solid waste disposal and recycling: • Destruction of PFAS in any waste stream using existing technology • Locking-in MSW tipping costs for decades • 15 percent net profits for Operators • Partnering with today’s landfill, incineration, and trucking companies to operate FFE’s decentralized solutions on small lots within a city’s limits. Regulatory Issues: Their planned demonstration with and at the U.S. Department of Energy may set new minimum standards for future waste processing regulations. Market Size and Price: They found immediate demand for 1,500+ units processing 50,000 tons per year at $120/ton, including sewage sludge. Multiple units could be operated at one location. Technology: FFE focuses on destroying the organic fraction and recycling the inorganic fraction of waste. After comparing the limitations, energy use, byproducts, failures, permitting, and operating costs of thermal, chemical, radiation, and biological processes, pyrolysis was the chosen process, albeit far from perfect. Previous pyrolysis attempts suffered from: Condensation of produced tars fouling equipment and produced syngas Metals, glass, and aggregates melted into a non-recyclable slag FFE’s novel combinations of existing bolt-on technologies solved technical limitations and enabled for current and future recycling of all inorganics Facility Operations: Each facility will be independently owned, project-financed, and managed. Many could be located on municipal land and may also benefit from municipal bond financing. Operating Partner Opportunities: As a technology company, FFE will license operating partners to build and/or own decentralized facilities. Candidate partners include developer-owner-operators of infrastructure, EPCs, transfer stations, landfills, incinerators, and long-haulers. Higher net profits are expected when tipping C&D, medical, and hazardous waste. FFE anticipates that most operating partners will want multiple facilities.
