When St. Lucie County made the decision to switch from dual residential recycling to single-stream recycling, the decision was made to construct its own Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for the collection and processing of its own materials. In May of 2014, St. Lucie County, Florida began collection of single-stream recycling for its residents and in September, the MRF was constructed. The county did extensive research on all potential equipment suppliers and emailed many customers of the various equipment manufacturers. Machinex was the only manufacturer that got a near 100% positive response from their respective customers. While the county had multiple selection criteria including price and design, this factor favored Machinex. The system purchased by St. Lucie County is designed to process 15 tons per hour of residential single stream and features a Drum Feeder for loading the system, Mach OCC Screen, Mach ONP Screen, Mach Finishing Screen, a Dual-Eject Optical Sorter for PET and HDPE, magnet for steel cans, an Eddy Current for aluminum, and a II-Ram Baler. The installation began in May of 2014 and was completed by late September. The official start-up and ribbon cutting ceremony was performed on October 24th, 2014.

When asked about the performance of the equipment and the Machinex staff, Ron Roberts, Solid Waste Division Director for St. Lucie County, had nothing but good things to say. “The Machinex staff was detail oriented throughout the system design, installation, training, and start-up of the system and all equipment is performing as designed and guaranteed” Machinex supplied the county with aggressive efficiency and purity performance guarantees for every commodity in the system. The Machinex equipment is meeting, or exceeding, every guarantee. According to Allison Lankow, Education and Marketing Coordinator for the county, the recycling rate in terms of tonnage and participation has increased by more than 50% since its inception last May. When asked why this was, Ms. Lankow stated that the county had invested a tremendous amount of time and money into educating its residents on the recycling program and what items to throw in to the carts.
