Washington State Recycling Association will host a cultural competency professional development training on Friday, March 20, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Southcenter Corporate Square, 635 Andover Park West in Tukwila, Washington. This is the first in a new series of professional development trainings the association will hold this year. The WSRA cultural competency training is designed to help professionals expand their skills in working with diverse audiences. The overarching goals for the training are to assist participants to:
·         Build greater awareness of  personal and organizational cultures, issues, and opportunities;
·         Examine how our personal and organizational cultures affect our ability to work across difference; and
·         Build skills to increase competencies as we work with others who are different from us.

The training will be led by Maketa Wilborn, Principal of Maketa Wilborn Consulting. Wilborn’s approach to diversity and equity training involves graphic facilitation and the use of visual mapping to encourage the group to fully engage in the process. Professionals from all industries are encouraged to attend. The training is open to the public and includes lunch and networking opportunities with leaders in Washington’s recycling industry. Registration costs are as follows: WSRA members $100, Non-members $150. A networking happy hour will also be open to attendees at the conclusion of the training. The event is sponsored by King County’s Local Hazardous Waste Management Program.
