The owner of Rizz Containers & Disposal LLC in Palmer Township is proposing a fairly simple solution to reduce some of the landfill waste in the Lehigh Valley. Rizz Containers & Disposal LLC principal Robert Rizzolino proposed building a 5,000-square-foot recycling sorting center at 2210 Corriere Road to sift through trash that should only be recyclable materials. “We do all the recycling for two of the biggest colleges around,” Rizzolino said. “As much as we try to educate the students and the maintenance department, there’s always something there that contaminates the load.”

Palmer Township’s zoning board unanimously approved the application. It only takes one bag of trash to contaminate a load of recyclables, Rizzolino told the board. Rizz Containers & Disposal currently services Lafayette College, Lehigh University, 11 warehouses within Palmer Township and sorts through more than 600 tons of recycling and 1,200 tons of waste per month, he said.

He said his facility could help keep more than 480 cubic yards of recycling out of local landfills. “(Recycling centers) aren’t going to sort through (trash). They want it dumped, on a conveyor belt and baled,” he said. “That’s why we’re asking for the permission from DEP and Palmer Township.” That’s where Rizzolino’s company would come in. The facility would sort through collections of cardboard, wood, sheetrock, metal and furniture to separate debris before it heads to the recycling center, he said.
