Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution that authorizes negotiations between the board and other government entities to form a regional Council of Government to implement a solid waste collection and recycling processing plan.

“Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District elected to explore and form a Council of Government in order to provide solid waste services for the Athens-Hocking District,” said Jane Forrest Redfern, Athens-Hocking Waste District director. “We basically just founded the concept and now we want other communities to come forward so that they can then decide and we can negotiate and figure out how we can form this COG.”

According to Ohio Auditor of State website, a regional council of government includes governing bodies of any two or more counties, municipal corporations, townships, special districts, school districts, or other political subdivisions. They enter into an agreement with each other for establishment of a regional council. In this case, the COG focuses on solid waste, composting and recycling issues. It would be made up of government entities that enter into waste contracts, such as cities, villages and townships.
