The city of Canton has been given a $24,272 state grant to buy several pieces of equipment for the Canton Recycling Center by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources by way of the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District. The city will purchase a used pickup truck, a used tow motor and a pallet jack with scale and will help keep the city’s recycling center in steady operation.

Cindy Kell, the city’s public works director, applied for the most recent grant. She has been involved in the operation of the Canton Recycling Center since its inception several years ago. Although two part-time employees are paid to work at the center Saturdays, the bulk of the center’s workforce involves volunteers, including community residents, local organizations, and students and faculty from Canton High School and Culver-Stockton College have been among the volunteers. In addition, people convicted of misdemeanors are sometimes sentenced by the Canton Municipal Court to perform community service work, and the recycling center.
