The City of Martinsburg has approved of a partnership with Apple Valley Waste to establish a single-stream recycling program, a partnership that better encompasses a wider array of recyclable items. Arranged by Public Works Director Jeff Wilkerson, the city’s commercial contract with Apple Valley couldn’t have taken place at a better time, as Wilkerson said the previous vendor was going out of business.

“It all kind of worked out pretty well. Our previous recycling vendor was going out of business, so as they were winding down their operation, I was able to get a contact with Apple Valley to discuss the recycling program they have,” Wilkerson said. “We toured their new facility in Hagerstown, and after reviewing what they offered and visiting this facility, we were able to talk over a period of time to work out an agreement.”

Wilkerson said the entities were able to come to an agreement, which stated the city would utilize Apple Valley as its recycling vendor and, in turn, would be able to recycle a wider range of items for its citizens, all in hopes of encouraging citizens to recycle more.
