The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) has partnered with WasteExpo to hold the 2017 EREF Summit, co-located with WasteExpo on Monday, May 8 in New Orleans, LA from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM CST. The EREF Summit is focused on landfill leachate and will include presentations on managing and treating landfill leachate from private companies, consultants, and academic researchers. Leachate treatment is becoming more challenging and typically is one of the largest operating costs for landfill owners. Publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) face more stringent discharge standards today than ever before, which are resulting in increased limitations being placed on accepting leachate from landfills, with some facilities no longer accepting leachate at all.  Similarly, on-site management of leachate poses increasing challenges, particularly when leachate will be directly discharged to bodies of water. “WasteExpo unites the various facets of the waste industry in one location which will allow attendees greater opportunity to participate in the Summit,” said Bryan Staley, EREF CEO & President. “EREF Summits are intended to educate and stimulate discussion on topics vital to the waste industry.” EREF Summit attendees will learn about:

  • The current state of practice regarding leachate management and how much leachate is managed across the U.S.
  • Perspectives from some of the largest landfill owners regarding how they deal with leachate
  • What on-site treatment processes are most common and challenges in using them
  • Emerging contaminants in leachate and how they are being handled
  • Challenges in accepting leachate at POTWs
  • Changes in leachate due to elevated temperature landfill conditions
