Jonathan Morris
Solid Waste Superintendent
Sussex County, NJ Municipal Utilities Authority

How long have you been in the industry?: This July will make 15 years.

How did you get involved? What was your first job?: Fifteen years ago, I was hired as a Truck Driver/Heavy Equipment Operator. Approximately five years ago, I was promoted to Operations Foreman and just this past December, my Supervisor retired and I was promoted to Solid Waste Superintendent

Who/What was your biggest influence?: My father, who taught me to work hard and always strive to better yourself. This has helped me get to where I am today.

What has been your most unique/interesting experience over the years?: A couple of years ago, I was called to our Residents Convenience Center because one of our employees, while assisting a customer, found a live rattlesnake in a bucket in the back of a vehicle. It was a very interesting day!

What do you see as the biggest challenges to the industry today?: Right now, I would say finding people who want to work in the solid waste industry as well as keeping up with all of the changes in the industry.

What do you like most about being in the industry/your job?: Coming up with solutions for day-to-day issues and being involved in the future planning of our facility.

Hobbies: I enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, ATV riding at my brother-in-law’s farm. I also volunteer for many community organizations, incuding the Fire Department, the Town Committee and others. But, my favorite hobby is spending time with my family and watching my children compete in sports.

Last vacation: Recently, my wife and I spent a long weekend in Lake George. My family owns a cottage in the Finger Lakes and we enjoy spending as much time as possible there during the summers.

Words to live by: Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and leave the rest to God (Ronald Reagan). | WA
