Meet the world’s first golden garbage truck: São Paulo’s “Caminhão Dourado.”

Studded with colorful lights and a giant recycling symbol on either side, trash has never looked so good. Old CDs, bottle caps, and weaved rags decorate the driver’s seat, which doubles as a makeshift TV studio.

The city’s trash collection companies, EcoUrbis and Loga, built the golden garbage truck earlier this year as a recycling awareness initiative. The city’s regular recycling trucks are bright green, and collect recyclables door-to-door on a weekly basis.

The golden garbage truck hosts a monthly web-series, SP Cidade Gentil (“São Paulo Kind City”). The series features famous chefs, rappers, artists, and activists. The show’s guests take viewers on tours of their favorite streets and neighborhoods in the city.

In addition to the web series, SP Cidade Gentil’s Facebook page posts news and information about recycling in São Paulo. For example, what happens to your used sponges and empty toothpaste tubes – in case you were wondering.

The golden garbage truck spreads the good word in person by visiting local public schools and hosting environmental forums.
