Residents of Prineville and Crook County have a new, permanent drop-off location for recycling their unwanted mattresses and box springs at no charge. The Prineville Recycling Depot n Prineville joins a growing statewide mattress recycling network that includes other Central Oregon collection sites in Madras and Bend. Prineville Recycling Depot now accepts mattresses and box springs for recycling Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mattresses should be placed inside the white recycle box near the west edge of the recycle center.
The industry-led mattress recycling program began mattress collection last year in Oregon. It replicates the Mattress Recycling Council’s (MRC) Bye Bye Mattress programs in other states. Prineville Recycling Depot is the first site in Crook County, and the fourth in Central Oregon, to join the Oregon network as a permanent drop-off location that accepts mattresses year-round.
Recycled mattress components can be used instead of virgin materials to make new products, which conserves water and energy. A mattress recycled through MRC’s Bye Bye Mattress program is separated into steel, foam, fibers and wood that are incorporated into new steel products, carpet padding, insulation, biomass fuel and other products.
