A new twist on traditional recycling programs is a hit in Henderson County, collecting nearly three tons of leftovers in the first four months.

The pilot program recycles food into compost or natural fertilizer for soil. The recycled food waste is what you might put down your garbage disposal or in your garbage.

"It can get a little smelly if you’ve left it out in room temperature for too long. So, for this program, we encourage folks to store their food in their freezer if you can find room," Environmental Programs Coordinator Rachel Kipar said. "Best thing to do is put in a paper bag that’s not coated, then you can use our program and put the whole thing right in the bin."

Special blue containers at the recycling center were filled with food bags.

The program recycles everything from eggshells to flowers, and even pizza boxes and paper towels.
