Holly Springs resident Mark Whitlock used his over 30 years of experience in the salvaging business to construct a building from mostly recycled materials. This structure is also the first to be built inside the Holly Springs’ Town Center district. The building, which Whitlock said he started working on over a year ago, serves as both his house, as well as a small office, which is located to the right of the house portion of the structure. Whitlock said he knew that this property could be in a great area given how the city was starting progress.

“I purchased this property three years ago based on what was going on with Holly Springs at that time, as well as what would be going on in the city in the future,” Whitlock said. “Everywhere you look there is something that has been repurposed. It’s not your cookie cutter project that most people are used to seeing.”

Whitlock is the owner of the salvaging business Interior Design Salvage, where he repurposes items and materials that go unwanted, and he uses them for various projects. He said that many of these materials were used to construct his house, with material coming from many different states and locations.

“All of the floor has been reclaimed out of a building in Pennsylvania, which used to be a part of an old school house,” Whitlock said. “A building in Kentucky was taken down by a fire, so I salvaged about six tractor trailer loads of it and turned it into furniture. I also brought back 13 tractor trailer loads of lights and light fixtures from Texas to use to create my own light fixtures. Every light fixture in the house was made from these materials and the ones I didn’t use for the light fixtures in my house I sold.”
