When thinking about landfills, most people think of a big hole in the ground filled with waste. Today’s landfills are far from that. Modern landfills are made up of several layers to take precautions against the waste spilling out and polluting the surrounding environment.

 There are typically mechanisms in place to not only keep the solid waste from seeping into the earth, but there are other filtration methods used to keep groundwater clean, filter out liquids found in a landfill, and even extract and reuse gas created by the landfill.
