ISRI will provide testimony at the Surface Transportation Board’s (STB) two-day public hearing on Urgent Issues in Freight Rail Service. The hearing opened today in Washington, D.C. with testimony from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. ISRI member Ben Abrams, President and CEO of Consolidated Scrap Resources (CSR) in York, Pa., will present testimony on behalf of ISRI and the recycling industry on Wednesday, April 27.

“The nation’s rail service plays an important role for the recycling industry, and it’s many times the only means of transportation available for heavy ferrous metals,” said ISRI Chief Lobbyist, Billy Johnson. “At the STB hearing, ISRI will explain our concerns with the current rail service and the negative impact unreliable service has on shippers of ferrous materials.”

Abrams’ testimony will detail how rail service impacts the supply chain, the success of recyclers nationwide, and how railroads are critical to shipping ferrous materials. “Ferrous metal is a raw material used for more than 70 percent of U.S. steel production,” said Johnson. “Steel made from recycled ferrous material saves approximately 68 percent of the energy needed to produce virgin steel, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
