KCI has been selected as Solid Waste Consultant of the Year 2016 by the Florida Chapter of APWA. KCI was selected based in its wide array of successful projects in 2016 and active participation of our staff in industry associations. The award was announced and presented at the APWA Expo event held in Tallahassee, FL. Mitch Kessler, President of KCI, commented “The Consultant of the Year award is a tremendous honor and all of us at KCI work hard every day to advance our clients’ objectives and the solid waste industry. Being recognized by the APWA speaks to the partnerships we are fortunate to have with our clients.”

Among the major projects completed by KCI in 2016 was the completion of the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority’s new biosolids composting operation. The 20-acre facility, located adjacent to ECUA’s wastewater treatment plant, can compost 400 tons of biosolids per week and produce about 30,000 cubic yards of compost annually. KCI was involved in all steps of the design and startup of the facility, from initial concept to the start of operation and beyond. KCI also assisted ECUA with the design, procurement, and contracting of a new 25 ton per hour materials recovery facility. Construction began in February 2016 and on August 22, 2016 ECUA held its grand opening. With KCI’s assistance, the entire MRF development process, from initial request for proposals to processing the first load of recyclables, occurred within a 13-month time span.

Other project work recognized by APWA include Manatee County’s successful transition to carted single stream recycling collection; operational assessments for Hallandale Beach, Oakland Park, and Zephyrhills; and competitive procurements for Winter Park and Indian River County.
