The Lancaster Compost Co-Ops, the only free-to-join organization in the city whose mission is to make composting accessible to all Lancaster, PA city residents, is launching its series of new member orientations and is co-hosting an Earth Day event with SoWe, a resident-driven initiative in Southwest Lancaster city. The Co-Ops is committed to helping city residents reduce their environmental footprint through composting, even if you live in a small apartment or don’t have a yard. Here is how you can get involved:

Attend a Free New Member Orientation:

The Co-Ops is hosting a series of free one-hour orientation events where participants will learn about composting, and the roles and responsibilities of co-op membership. Joining the Co-Ops allows individuals to divert household waste from landfills, take home finished compost, and connect with like-minded community members.

  • Where: At any of our bins located in public spaces or city parks (Buchanan Park, Musser Park, New Holland Recycling Center, Linear Park, Behind Culliton Park, Brandon Park).
  • When: Typically held on weekday evenings or weekend mornings.
  • To sign up for spring and summer orientations and join our energetic community of composters, visit the Lancaster Compost Co-Ops Eventbrite Page. We are constantly adding new orientations so check back often.

Join Us at the Earth Day Event:

In collaboration with SoWe’s Earth Day Celebration, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Penn State Master Gardeners, and Lancaster City, the Lancaster Compost Co-Ops are participating in this hands-on, educational event. Suitable for all ages, attendees can learn about composting (and join the Lancaster Compost Co-Ops at the event!), proper tree mulching, street and river trash clean-up, native trees and plants, and rain barrels. There will also be giveaways such as free compost, mulch, trees, plants, and more!

Additionally, attendees will be able to contribute to an art installation themed “Nature in your Neighborhood” and enjoy community open mic performances showcasing earth-inspired art forms (poetry, song, etc.)

  • Where: 285 Conestoga St (Behind Culliton Park Compost Bin)
  • When: Saturday, April 20th from 11AM – 3PM (Earth education and activities from 11AM – 1:30PM; Community Open Mic from 1:30PM – 3PM)

Our mission is to make Lancaster more eco-friendly, and offering a line up of new member orientations and the co-hosted Earth Day event are a testament to how the organization is increasing access to composting and showing residents how easy it is to get involved. Join us in our commitment to create greener, more sustainable Lancaster city!
