The Miami County Solid Waste District hosts a variety of programs and events to benefit and educate the Miami County residents. One new program that the Miami County Solid Waste District will be hosting this year is T.R.A.S.H., which stands for Taking Responsibility at School and Home. T.R.A.S.H. is offered through the Boonshoft Muesum of Discovery from Dayton.

The program allows any Miami County elementary school to request an in-classroom recycling education program where students learn how much trash they produce, where the trash goes, and proper recycling for Miami County. The elementary schools have to request the program through Boonshoft for any of their kindergarten through fifth grade classes. Boonshoft sends a representative to run the program to the elementary school classes, which the representative can hold up to four programs throughout the day.

The T.R.A.S.H. program is “excellent for small groups” and is “very engaging and fun,” said Solid Waste Program Coordinator Brad Petry. Petry stated the program was inspired by a local elementary school teacher who utilized the Boonshoft program previously. Petry was invited to attend the program and commented, “The students walked away with a good understanding of trash and recycling.” After attending the program, Petry wanted to provide that educational experience to the rest of Miami County students.

The program will be paid for by Miami County with each program being $175 with a total cost that shall not exceed $5,000.
