The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management’s (DSWM) Waste Management Fund has once again been recognized with the prestigious Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).  The certificate was awarded to DSWM for the Waste Management Enterprise Fund’s annual comprehensive financial report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2022.

“I congratulate the Department of Solid Waste Management for being awarded this prestigious certificate for the 29th consecutive year,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Proper financial stewardship is essential to the functioning of any government agency, and the Solid Waste team have shown once again that their financial practices meet the high standard expected by the residents of Miami-Dade County.”

The ACFR was judged by a panel of impartial experts to meet extremely high standards, including “demonstrating a constructive spirit of disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.” According to GFOA, “the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

“For nearly three decades, GFOA has recognized our department for our transparency and accountability towards the precious resources our customers have entrusted to us, and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Olga Espinosa-Anderson, DSWM Interim Director.  “I congratulate our dedicated Financial Reporting staff for their tireless work, as well as our management team and all of the hardworking men and women of DSWM who provide essential services to our customers.” The DSWM provides waste and recycling services to residents in the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County and several municipalities, as well as mosquito control services countywide.
