Since the South Central Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA) purchased its portable tire shredder from BCA Industries earlier this year via a state grant program. The shredder has been used at illegal dumping cleanups throughout Dona Ana County. Patrick Peck, SCSWA Director, explains “Scrap tires illegally dumped in the desert are a big problem environmentally – they become a home to disease harboring vectors that pose a threat to human health, such as mosquitoes breeding in rainwater that pools in the tires. With the tire shredder we can turn a huge negative into a beneficial use, and the tire shreds can be used for multiple purposes. Up until now, the only disposal option regionally for scrap tires was to landfill them.”
John Neuens, with BCA Industries, notes, New Mexico lacks density for private industry tire recycling and a portable tire shredder for cities and counties makes sense in many of these areas. “It can be moved easily with a one ton pickup to cleanup sites. It’s affordable, simple to operate, dependable and easy to maintain. Every year more agencies realize this type of tire shredder is the perfect solution to their scrap tire dilemma.”

“Most importantly”, Neuens says, “agencies are assured that the tires are visibly and legally shredded into a recyclable material, and there is no risk of the tires turning up in a desert arroyo or nearby lake.” New Mexico approved grants for two BCA portable tire shredders in 2014 and two more in 2015 to assist county and city agencies in their recycling efforts. The portable tire shredder can shred passenger car and light duty truck tires up to 20” in size (semi tires can be processed after sidewall removal or quartering). The SCSWA applied for and received a Recycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) Grant from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) to purchase the tire shredder.
