The city of Portage’s sanitation department could have a green fleet complete by 2028. That’s Mayor Sue Lynch’s goal, she said. The department is getting seven new CNG-powered trucks through grants from the Volkswagen litigation settlement fund, Superintendent Randy Reeder said. Five have already been delivered.
The city also has a grant to help pay for a compressed natural gas fueling station, but that won’t be until next year, likely October or November, he said. Reeder showed the City Council a three-minute video Drive Clean Indiana produced about Portage’s project.
“This is one of the cleanest, most reliable fuels that is available for heavy-duty trucks,” said Drive Clean Indiana’s execiutive director, Carl Lisek. “They’re very clean-burning,” Lynch said. “They’re great for the environment, and they’re great for the city.”
