Nancy Albright, Lexington’s Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works, said the Lexington Recycling Center, which serves a dozen central Kentucky counties including Madison, is being shut down for several weeks, starting Monday.

According to Albright, a shaft that moves the recyclables for sorting, broke down earlier this week. The company that makes parts for the equipment is shut down for at least three weeks because of the COVID-19 epidemic. “Over the past year we have been making long overdue improvements to the equipment at the recycling center,” Albright said. “This equipment was scheduled to be overhauled.”

The suspension of recycling services not only affects Lexington and Fayette County, but their partner communities, which have been notified of the problem. Besides Madison County, those include: Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Midway, Montgomery County, Mt. Sterling, Nicholasville, Paris, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Versailles, Winchester and Woodford County.

Each of those communities will be informing their residents of changes in the collection process based on their local storage capacity.
