With more than double the indoor space, a powerful new baler up and running, and a new mattress-recycling program kicking in, the recycling effort in Becker County is on a roll. Wheeled conveyor belts and sorting equipment in the recycling center rise high above the tip floor and automatically sort and drop various types of metal and plastic down into big holding bins in the county’s Materials Recovery Facility.

A 19,000 square-foot, pre-engineered steel addition now wraps around two sides of the original recycling center, and was put up by Bristlin Construction. “They did a very good job,” said Becker County Environmental Services Administrator Steve Skoog.

He said the Becker County Materials Recovery Facility now offers 31,000 square feet of space, and is fire-protected by a sprinkler system fed by a 12-inch well pipe. It has a new 50 horsepower, fully-automatic self-tying baler capable of producing an assembly line of baled recyclable commodities, from metal cans to paper to plastics.
