A landfill on the village’s northwest side is running out of space, and the company that owns it is seeking state approval to add 40 acres to its site.  The Orchard Ridge Recycling and Disposal facility, owned by Waste Management, recently received approval from the Waukesha County Board to expand on the about 160-acre property. The company now must get approval from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The landfill has about 18 months until it runs out of space to put waste, according to Menomonee Falls Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald. The landfill takes in waste from Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties, according to DNR data.

If it gets DNR approval, the landfill is expected to be able to serve the same customers through 2035 or 2040, Fitzgerald said. The village has already approved the facility’s expansion. “Our role now is complete,” Fitzgerald said. “Now, the matter is really with Waste Management and the DNR.”

The Orchard Ridge landfill, W124 N9355 Boundary Road, has been in operation since 1994, according to the DNR. For at least three years, Waste Management has been in talks with village, county and state officials to get an expansion.

“They’ve been working on this for a number of years, and I think frankly at this point, they’re probably looking at final authorization sometime in the first half of 2018,” Fitzgerald said.
